Wineries and Wine Routes CONCA DE BARBERÀ D.O.

The Conca de Barberà D.O. is defined as a DO with a unique character, marked by its history, people, landscapes, wineries and wines. To know this DO is to know the trepat, the indigenous red grape variety of the Conca de Barberà, and the excellent wines it produces with its hint of acidity, freshness and fruity notes. This variety has been used mainly for wines and rosé cavas, but for some years several wineries have used it to make red author wines.

Why is it special?

The wine-growing tradition of the region dates back the 12th century when the Cistercian monks of the Santa Maria de Poblet Abbey and the Templars of Barberà de la Conca transmitted their knowledge and experiences in the vineyard and the elaboration of the wine to the farmers. Today, the declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, continues to play a prominent role in various aspects, such as the commitment to sustainability and wine tourism along with the Cistercian route. The Vinum Conca brand to market wines and cavas produced in the area is more fashionable than ever!

What to do?

A route to the DO must include the modernist wineries of Barberà de la Conca, l'Espluga de Francolí, Montblanc, Pira, Rocafort de Queralt and Sarral Cooperatives. The capital of the region, Montblanc, is a medieval town that retains a spectacular wall. One of its towers is the venue of the Regulatory Council of the DO, which proposes the Route to the Conca de Barberà wineries to enjoy the architecture, vineyards and wines from its wineries and, at the same time, discover various places of interest, such as Poblet Monastery, the Rural Life Museumin l’Espluga, the cave of Font Major de l’Espluga , the Templar Castle of Barberàand numerous villages, churches and hermitages.

DO Conca de Barberà

When we speak of the DO Conca de Barberà we have to speak of the “Trepat”, the native grape variety grown in the valleys of the Rivers Corb, Baja Segarra and Conca de Tremp. The “Trepat” offers us light, fruity wines and exceptional rosé cavas.
