Year of construction
1920-1921
Architect
Cèsar Martinell i Brunet
Description
The town that saw the birth of the first cooperative winery experience throughout the State, Cèsar Martinell built the building, located at noon on the town and on the road, between 1920 and 1921, commissioned by the viticulture section of the Sindicat Agrícola de Barberà, with the financial help of the Bank of Valls.
His project included four major technical innovations (both constructive and wine production technology) that became their own invariants of their work in almost all their cellars. These invariants are based on: the construction of the structure of the ships based on parabolic brick arches, the location of the windows for the ventilation of the ships, the cylindrical underground cups and separated by ventilated insulating chambers, and the composition and textures on the facades.
The building consists of two rectangular ships of different dimensions and arranged in parallel, with different tile roofs on wooden and interior cabinets solved on the sides with lighted brick arches of brick in the book.
The main body has a basilica plan and contains the surface cups. The inner pillars ramify longitudinally and form parabolic arches.
The tower of the water tank (built in 1929) is especially peculiar, with a structure and shape similar to that of the Baroque bell tower of the town, with which it establishes some dialogue and mimicry.
Finally, highlight the long underground passageway that crosses the main nave and carefully protects hundreds of bottles of cava from the winery.
