Description
The cellar of the Pinell de Brai Agricultural Syndicate is, for many, the best Cathedral of the Wine. A construction that wanted to evoke and infect a sense of prosperity, at crude and difficult times, after the phylloxera through the territory.
The construction of the cooperative winery was full of difficulties and obstacles, but the tenacity, idealism and energy with which it was maintained and driven by the partners, and the enthusiasm with which it was seen and commented on the growth of the building, shows That way of being, between routine and vital, proper to the people of these places. Brave people who knew how to transform their work into art, with a very high investment for those times and which left the legacy of a magnificent work for prosperity.
The disposition of their ships (central, two lateral ones and a fourth one above the power station) would only require apse to form a plant of Christian temple. Thus, it is at Pinell de Brai where Cèsar Martinell, his architect, unfolded all the stylistic and stylistic arsenal he had within his reach.
The arrangement of its parabolic arches, with the typical drilled carcans of Martinell and used as high steps to access the top of the tubs, is a surprising architectural spectacle and conception of a space that distills lightness and lightness.
Outside, the aspect of the main façade is not less than majestic. The stone contours of the doors and the large windows with flattened brick tassels stand out. Also, the glazed green ceramics that crowns the three naves and, above all, Xavier Nogués's ceramic frieze, where daily scenes are described around the vine, oil, the process of elaboration and its consumption.
