The Costa Daurada (Golden Coast) has the blue of the sea and the red of the wine, the green of the forests and the intense yellow of one of the most precious products in the Mediterranean: oil. In this TripIdea we propose to fully enter into the universe of this golden liquid, which also strongly impregnates the idiosyncrasy of these lands.

THE FIRST PRESS OF THE YEAR

It is a tradition in many municipalities of Tarragona to celebrate the first harvest of olives with the popular festival - in many places you will hear them mention aulives, according to the local pronunciation. The first presses to obtain the new oil of each season deserve a good welcome meal. The weather and the variations in climate terribly affect the production of olives - like that of many other agricultural products - and the oil, therefore, adopts new nuances every year (also the price).

You can enjoy the New Oil Deast, for example, in les Borges del Camp (popular lunch the last weekend of November), in Maspujols and Alforja (on the same dates), in Almoster (sardanas dances and lunch on the first Sunday of December), in Vandellós (a weekend in January), or Riudecanyes (breakfast with oil from the village cooperative the first weekend of January). There are really few things better than good bread with tomatoes with extra virgin olive oil served by the same producer. Is your mouth watering? Then join the dates of this oil rush!

THE SIURANA PROTECTED DO FAIR IN REUS

Probably the most crowded new oil festival is the Fira de l’oli DO Siurana that held in Reus in mid-November, when the olive season starts. It gathers more than twenty cooperatives and producers of the protected denomination of origin and you can taste and buy the first oil production of the year from each producer.

To encourage the children, workshops and parallel activities are also organized with the field and oil as common denominator.

And you cannot miss a tasting breakfast, the cooking workshops and the Mostra Gastronòmica, with the participation of fifteen restaurants of Reus that prepare special recipes with the new extra virgin olive oil.

TO UNDERSTAND THE OIL CULTURE

The cultivation of olives and the production of oil have marked the day to day of many villages of the interior of the Costa Daurada (Golden Coast). It has drawn landscapes and enhanced the economy of these lands. Oil is a culture and a way of life such as wine is. In the Museu de l’Oli de Vandellòs, for example, you will find the historical machinery of a mill and you will see it working. Audiovisual panels, audio guides and sound systems will help you explore the world of oil and finally, you will taste the one produced in Vall de Llors.

The olive cultivation also has a dedicated area in the Sierra del Montsant mountains. It is the Centre d’Interpretació de l’Oli i de les Economies Productives de Montsant, in the same point of information of the natural park. There you can see how an olive washing machine works (the first step of the processing), the grinding and the press, the decantation rafts, how the preservation is done, how the miller's space is or how the oil transport works once the process has ended. The diverse productive activities preserved in this beautiful mountain range of Tarragona are also presented in an audiovisual.

Are you ready for the dive? Wake up the senses and dive in the oil!
