The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most beautiful and idyllic areas we have in Europe. The temperature, the sun, the colours of the region, the culture and the cuisine are the main factors that make this region one of the most visited locations by people from all over the world. The Mediterranean is very easily identified by everyone. In fact, if we close our eyes and imagine what the landscape of this area is like, everyone thinks of the same thing: that intense blue sea, the sun, the wine and its vineyards, modernism or Roman buildings. Here in Catalonia, one of the areas that breathes the most Mediterranean air is the Baix Penedès (one of the smallest counties in Catalonia). Located between Barcelona and Tarragona, the northern part of the Costa Daurada is a perfect place to enjoy the culture and Mediterranean landscape with the whole family.
First of all, we will talk about the culture and the heritage surrounding this beautiful area. Land of great personalities such as the musician Pau Casals or the writer Àngel Guimerà, this region of the Costa Daurada has a great and powerful cultural heritage. It is not only a land of castell (human towers) tradition, but it is also a region where the historical culture of prehistoric times, the Romans and modernism left a very important mark. In fact, towns such as El Vendrell and Calafell, given the large number of family activities and cultural network that they have, are certified municipalities as a Family Tourism Destination by the Generalitat de Catalunya. In this sense, in the northern part of the Costa Daurada, young and old will be able to enjoy numerous monuments and places to visit that will take you back to past times. Special mention should be made of the art of dry-stone walling, which was named UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018, or the Roman constructions in the area. If you would like to know more about the Roman legacy, in the winery AVGVSTVS FORVM, for example, for 60 minutes the whole family can travel back to Roman times and enjoy a wide range of activities, such as discovering the winemaking processes from Roman times to the present day, games to experiment with flavours and aromas or a tasting of grape must and the winery's own vinegars that have earned a special place in kitchens all over the world.
When it comes to the landscape, the Baix Penedès is a shallow and dry region near to the sea, which makes it perfect for growing grapes. The production of wines and cavas with DO Penedès is one of the most outstanding aspects of the region. In fact, this tradition of wine production has made it one of the main destinations for wine tourism and family agrotourism in the territory, as the taste and smell of its wines, being close to the sea, have some very characteristic and distinctive features. So, in autumn, for example, which is the grape harvest season, we recommend that you immerse yourself in the wonderful wine culture of this part of Catalonia. The best way to enjoy wine tourism with your family? Visiting wineries and farmhouses that offer workshops and visits for both adults and children. The Mas Llagostera, for example, offers two fun activities related to wine tourism: a family ecogymkhana where you will learn values such as sustainability, commitment and ecology and a dry stone route around the estate where you will enjoy a nice walk through fields of vines, olive trees and woods where you will find huts and walls of this type of art.
History, tradition, culture, vegetation, gastronomy... the northern part of the Costa Daurada is enchanting at first sight. With plenty of activities to do, young and old will enjoy the landscape and tradition that this part of our country has to offer, like never before. If you want to know the wide range of family activities we offer, we recommend that you visit the app Trips & Kids of the Costa Daurada. We are sure that there you will find the offer that best suits you. So, what are you waiting for to have a 100% Mediterranean experience?
