December 25, we wish you a Merry Christmas! If you see a child in the cradle this will mean that the manger is already installed and all the shepherds can go to worship the child. At Christmas there are many towns and cities that represent the birth of Jesus. But they are all different: there are very special mangers, staged with men and women of flesh and blood, performed in abandoned villages, in historic farms, enviable rural spaces ... In this TripIdea we selected some of the most important cribs of the Costa Daurada (Golden Coast). So, take the leather pouch, and come, to the stable!

MASÍA DE CASTELLÓ, A MANGER IN AN ABANDONED VILLAGE

Since the end of the nineties, an association decided to recover the small town of Castelló, together with Vandellòs (in the municipality of L'Hospitalet de l'Infant), and to represent each year one of the most unique living mangers in Catalonia, the Pessebre dels Estels. The town comes to life recovering spaces such as the threshing floors, squares and houses and offering visitors a reencounter with the old trades.

You can see the work of the threshing floors batters, the coalmen or the smiths. Up to 325 people participate in the staging of Jesus Christ´s birth located in a beautiful mountain village: a performance that will also make you live the daily life of many small towns of the principality in the past. It is usually represented during three days in the afternoon during the Christmas holidays.

GUIDED BY THE OLD SHEPHERD IN POBLA DE MONTORNÈS

One of the most veterans of the birth scene, the 'old shepherd', will accompany you to the Pessebre de la Pobla de Montornès and will answer any question you have and the 'shepherd apprentices' who accompany you during the visit. The representation is made in 45 minutes shifts and the itinerary runbs around the Montornès Hermitage, located in a small hill next to the town.

"Viene el invierno y se prepara
un pesebre estimado;
Adobad los caminos, que el paso sea bien plano,
reforzad el tejado, que quizá nevará"

(“Winter is coming, and a beloved manger is goung to be prepared;

Prepare the trails, so that they are even;

reinforce the roof, maybe we will have snow”)

Poem by Olga Xirinachs, dedicated to the manger of the villaje. A very recommendable tour of half a kilometer to allow young and old to approach the world´s most represented scene

THE VALLS MANGER WITH DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN

The anecdotes, history and daily life of Valls have sneaked into the living manger of the capital of the Alt Camp region. It is represented in the old quarter, and it reviews, during sixty scenes, the main episodes of the city´s history. The church of Sant Joan houses the biblical representations and the rest are spread over the center of the neighborhood, in a show performed by more than 300 voluntary actors, with music and dance. Every year, around 5,000 people visit this manger on the Costa Daurada (Golden Coast), which shows that the neighbors and merchants of Valls have talent and experience!

THE MANGER ON THE SAND OF VILA-SECA LA PINEDA PLATJA

If there is a representation of the manger leaving everyone with their mouths open, whether lovers or detractors of Christmas, this is the manger on the beach of La Pineda.A group of sculptors from around the world are responsible for building the different scenes of Jesus' birth with sand. The result is an ephemeral monument that will leave you stunned by the quality of the details and the perfection in the forms. If you go with children you can also cooperate in constructing and painting ornaments - also made of sand - and thus feel part of a work that is repeated every year a few meters from where the waves break. Jesus was born on the beach, what a discovery!
