World Heritage Poblet

Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet

Poblet is the only monastery of the three on the Cistercian Route – Poblet, Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges – still lived in by monks. It preserves practically all the buildings erected over the centuries to meet the needs of a dynamic community as it expanded under the protection of the Catalan-Aragonese monarchs and especially after Peter III the Ceremonious (1336-1387) made it the royal pantheon of the dynasty. Poblet is the largest inhabited Cistercian complex in Europe. In 1991 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
