World Heritage The Late Roman Times

Roman Villa of Centcelles

This Roman villa, probably built in the 4th century, has become a key monument in the history of early Christian art. In one of its rooms you can see the excellently preserved remains of the earliest known Christian-themed dome mosaic in the Roman world. It is decorated with hunting and Biblical scenes and figures of uncertain interpretation. In the middle of the dome room there is an underground crypt and a sub-crypt, which it is believed may have been for the Emperor Constantine or another important Christian dignitary. Centcelles is managed by the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona and is part of the Roman Tarraco archaeological complex declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
