CALAFELL

If you have not tried it, it will seem like a strange phenomenon, an inexplicable passion. Don´t you understand why walking with the help of canes has become a real fever? We introduce you, the Nordic walking: the most complete discipline to know the Costa Daurada (Golden Coast) by feet!

In Calafell they were the pioneers in importing this sport with an army of followers throughout the world. Nordic walking excursions are organized here on weekend nights, but, of course, also during the day. In fact at the Tourist Office you can get some canes and walk at your own pace. The very long beach of the municipality is the ideal place to carry out this healthy activity with which you will train 90% of the body muscles. A sport as complete as swimming or even more.

ROUTE THTOUGH THE HISTORICAL LEGACY OF CALAFELL

An open-air museum. This is how you will perceive some of the highlights of Calafell. We suggest you, whether in Nordic walking or with a simple walk, to start the route at Santa Creu Castle. The views are spectacular from this hill and that, by the way, lodges constructions of the Iberian and Roman epoch (ceramics of between yhe 3rd century b.C. and the 2nd century a.D. have been found).

At the beginning of the Middle Ages, the peasants who lived in huts were expelled and the building was made precursory of the present one. Today, after a long process of restoration, you can visit it, even with a guide on Saturdays and Sundays in the morning.

The peasants expelled from the old Calafell gave place to the present old nucleus of the town, around the castle. Main Street and Penyes Street were created no less than in the 12th century, then with medieval houses made with the stone of the hill itself. It was not until five hundred years later that the nucleus became larger and formed the network through which today you can walk quietly.

ONE OF THE FIRST SETTLEMENTS ON THE COSTA DAURADA

To the north of the beach of Calafell, between the railroad and the C-31 road, are the vestiges of the first settlers of this place. It is an Iberian citadel of the 6th century b.C. belonging to the tribe of the Cosetanos. A strategic settlement that acted as a port of arrival for commercial products from all over the Mediterranean, especially from Carthage, Ibiza or the south of the Italian peninsula.

Notice how this space has changed; at that time, this citadel was built on a peninsula between ponds and wetlands

The visit will be especially interesting if you are guided by an expert who will make you imagine life here more than 2,500 years ago. They have reproduced the houses of the settlers and also of the caudillo, the owner and lord of this town. Every spring weekend there are guided tours at dawn.

During the first half of August, Calafell honors its past in Ibercalafell, the Festival de laTerra Ibèrica (Festival of Iberian Land), dedicated especially to spread the world of the Iberians among children and adults. Historical representations are made in the old city, workshops of Iberian cuisine, or gincanas and archaeological games. Welcome to the history of our civilization!
