Few places are so suitable on the Costa Daurada (Costa Daurada) for outdoor dining with friends or family. The recreational area Fondo del Mata is the place that you are looking for to eat quietly, running away from the noise of the city and the daily rush. You will arrive from El Vendrell taking the TV-2048 road and then following the Costa Roja (Red Coast) path. The natural area has an environment with fountains and two ponds, from which wáter is channeled from a mill, several paths to walk and benches to sit and enjoy the breeze. Maybe you will not believe, but this area is an old restored rubbish dump

The most common activity is to prepare the food yourself. If you bring meat and book the space with the City Council a couple of days before, you can set up a barbecue using the ones that are in Fondo del Mata, and use the tables and chairs that are available to visitors. If you have some ability with the fire and have bought good meat, you're going to lick your fingers! Here you will not have to suffer to know where the children stop or to find the formula to entertain them. Just get a ball or prepare some games and fun are assured. In this natural area are also the municipal social gardens, which a group of people from El Vendrell cultivates with great care.

IMMERSION IN THE LAND OF THE 'XATÓ'

Xató is one of the recipes that have the DNA of the Costa Daurada (Golden Coast) engraved. It is a dish made with escarole, tomato, cod and a sauce of almonds and ñoras (dried peppers), but that has as many varieties as xatonaires prepare them. Possibly that is why the gastronomic proposal Ruta del Xató,

was born, to know not only this Tarragona salad but also the lands where it is tasted: Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and El Garraf.

The xató territory is the most important wine and cava production area in Catalonia; it has 23 kilometers of beaches and covers three natural parks: El Garraf, Foix and Olèrdola. The Grand Xató Tour is a journey on foot or by mountain bike that, as a circular route and in stages, makes you live the landscape of these regions with intensity. You need to be in good physical shape. If you have little time, we recommend the third stage. It runs from Calafell to Vendrell along a path between olive trees, carob trees, cereals and vineyards. It includes the Via Verde – Green Trail – between the beach of Sant Salvador and the center of El Vendrell.

THE GREAT 'XATÓ' FESTIVAL

During the season, the municipalities of the Xató Route are filled with the traditional xatonadas, contests of xató masters, or markets of products related with the xató. The first Sunday of February, the Great Xatonada Popular is celebrated in Vendrell, with hundreds of diners tasting the same dish, and the first Sunday in March, this celebration is repeated in Calafell.
