Culture MODERNISM

Sensuality in forms, organic figures, colourful fantasy…Modernism, as in France was Art Nouveau, was opposed to bourgeois conservatism and wanted to bring culture and art to the people, while at the same time reconverting the aesthetics of cities. In Catalonia, this current had a personality of its own. Reus, along with Barcelona, was transformed thanks to the contributions of great architects like Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner or Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The Modernist Route to Reus will allow you to discover the façades of 26 Modernist buildings, culminating with a visit to the Interpretation Centre.

Did you know?

  • Antoni Gaudí is one of the most representative historical figures of Catalan culture. He created a unique architecture inspired by nature and organic elements. In fact, the year 2002 was proclaimed the International Gaudí Year in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his birth.
  • Despite the fact that he did not stand out because of his good grades when he studied at school, Gaudí mastered geometry and mathematical calculations with intuitive methods that he applied to his architecture so that its forms resembled the maximum to nature.
  • His architectural contribution was to define three surfaces with ingenious names derived from botany and physiology, such as helicoid - which comes from a trunk of an eucalyptus tree; Hyperboloid - the shape of the femur; and hyperbolic paraboloid - the shape of the tendons of a hand.-
