World Heritage The Late Roman Times
Mèdol Quarry
El Mèdol Quarry is the largest of the dozen or so ancient quarries found around Tarraco. It has been calculated that some 50,000 cubic metres of stone were extracted from it to build the city. El Mèdol’s most emblematic element is its needle, a 16-metre-high column that shows the original level of the rock before quarrying began. The site is managed by the Tarragona Museum of History and is part of the Roman Tarraco Archaeological Complex declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000.
