El Montmell- Marmellar

This area covers lands in the municipality of Montmell, in the southernmost part of the Bloc de Gaià. Its singular relief is the result of the erosion of calcareous rock by water filtration. Its typical Mediterranean landscape is the transition from the coastal maquis of kermes oak and palmetto on the dry sides of the maritime slopes and the little-changed holm-oak vegetation with laurestine in the rest of the area, where scrub, thickets and brushwood, together with dry meadows, now prevail. Despite a somewhat impoverished fauna, certain Mediterranean elements stand out; there is a particularly important presence of invertebrates, including the Bythinella alonsae, a mollusc endemic to the springs.
