World Heritage The Late Roman Times
Scipios’ Tower
A Roman funerary monument built in the first half of the 1st century AD next to the Via Augusta. The tower-shaped mausoleum has three superimposed bodies of decreasing perimeter and is thought to have had a pyramid-shaped crown. The façade of the middle body has two carved figures of Attis –and oriental funerary divinity – with an inscription. An erroneous identification of the figures as the Scipio brothers is the origin of the name it is traditionally given. The tower is part of the Roman Tarraco archaeological complex declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. It is an open air monument managed by the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona.
