VALLS

Costa Daurada is a unique territory: the place where the Mediterranean caresses an exceptional piece of land. What about visiting the comarca of Alt Camp, where cuisine and culture have their own DNA? In fact, people from Valls are said to stare at the sky three times: one to observe the belltower; one to get excited with “castells”, and one to enjoy “calçotada”. Check out the following tips.

In Plaça Pere Català i Roca, near Plaça del Blat ─known as the Km0 of “castells”─, find Museu Casteller, the perfect place to learn about the 200-year history of “castells”, while also testing your strength just as if you were part of a human tower, but specially, getting emotional with the stunning milestones set by Catalan “castellers” thanks to unbelievable 9-and-10-floor constructions. S-pec-ta-cu-lar!

Valls though, besides “castells”, is a by-word for proper cuisine, as it is the cradle of “calçotada”, a sweet onion grown within the IGP Calçot de Valls brand in Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Baix Penedès and Tarragonès. This onion is cooked on the flames and eating it is paying true tribute to local produce, because the known as “calçotada” sauce is made using extra virgin olive oil, nuts, tomatoes, nyores (sweet peppers) and… every house’s secret ingredient. Enjoy “calçotada” with your family or friends, and enjoy one of the great pleasures of winter!

Weekend in Valls also means patrimony, and so we recommend that you don’t miss Capella del Roser, located in Carrer de la Cort, which still preserves the original glazed ceramics from the 17th century, which show passages of the Battle of Lepanto. They’re a true treasure by Llorenç Passoles.

Also love music? If so, don’t miss Robert Gerhard (1896 – 1970), a musician born in Valls that is considered to be the father of electronic music. Yes, you read that right! Right in the old hospital of Sant Roc, check out Espai Gerhard, which will allow you to get to know this very international artist and his works thanks to new technologies.

Don’t forget though, before you leave Valls, to say goodbye by admiring art made “castells” thanks to the monument to Xiquets de Valls, constructed in the early 70s by artist Josep Busquets.

Getting to know Costa Daurada away from the sea is a unique adventure. See you there!
